editTips and Tricks

Below are 10 tips and tricks on how to write hilarious comedy.

  1. Observe comedy, watch comedy, read comedy.

  2. Identify a co-genre over which the comedy can be added (e.g. romantic-comedy, historical-comedy).

  3. Incorporate multiple levels of humor (e.g., obvious, subtle).

  4. Treat your novel like any other novel - include plot and conflict - and use humor within, e.g., over-exaggerate the problem.

  5. The key to humor is surprise - an unexpected joke, outcome, gag.

  6. Consider what makes you laugh and draw on that.

  7. Test out your jokes/gags on others.

  8. Draw inspiration from the mundane - sometimes over-exaggerating the truth is enough to make people laugh.

  9. Use metaphors and similes to drive a point home comically

  10. Work and/or consult with others to gain different views of humor.
